Street tree causing persistent fouling on cars

Reported via iOS in the Overhanging branches category anonymously at 15:47, Friday 24 April 2026

Sent to Peterborough City Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 9349525.

Dear Highways/Tree Team,

I’m writing to report an issue with a street tree on Blackmead, located outside Nos. 4–6.

Birds are consistently roosting in the overhanging branches above the parking area, resulting in heavy and repeated fouling of vehicles directly below. This has been ongoing for some time and is affecting several residents.

People, including children, are coming into contact with droppings when getting in and out of their cars, which is unpleasant and unhygienic and is making normal use of the parking area difficult.

Given the extent of the canopy over the road and the evident roosting activity, could the tree please be inspected to assess whether selective pruning or other measures could help reduce the issue?

I’ve attached a photo showing the location and extent of the overhang.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

  • Thanks for your enquiry regarding a council-owned tree.

In accordance with the Peterborough Tree & Woodland Strategy 2018-2028, a qualified tree surveyor has visited the site, assessed your request and concluded that there is no need to undertake tree works.

We don't prune or remove council-owned trees because they are considered too big or too tall unless it is deemed to be dangerous. We also don't prune or remove a council-owned tree to remove or reduce blossom, tree sap, honeydew or remove fallen leaves and blossom from private land. Tree sap or honeydew are a seasonal problem. When we plant new trees, we try to choose those that are less likely to cause this problem. You can remove tree sap or honeydew from your car using warm soapy water. We regularly sweep leaves and blossom from our parks, roads, and footpaths or cycle paths that run alongside them.

All council-owned trees are surveyed by a qualified surveyor for safety every one-to-five years, depending on how much the area surrounding them is used. We also carry out maintenance work if it's needed.

For further information please read the Peterborough Tree & Woodland Strategy 2018-2028 which is available on Peterborough City Council's website

We trust this answers your enquiry, however, should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Aragon Direct Services - Trees@Peterborough.gov.uk
