Thank you for your report.
Reporting an Abandoned Vehicle
People often confuse a genuinely abandoned vehicle, which the council has legal powers to investigate and remove, with a nuisance or untaxed vehicle, which we may not be able to take action on.
The council will only remove a car, van, or other vehicle if the Investigating Officer is satisfied that it is abandoned, in line with set legal criteria. Each report is assessed individually, and officers can only take action where the vehicle meets the DEFRA definition of abandonment. When deciding whether a vehicle is abandoned, the Investigating Officer will consider a range of factors, including:
It has no registered keeper on the DVLA database. It has been stationary in the same location for a significant period of time. It is significantly damaged, run‑down, or unroadworthy (for example flat tyres, missing wheels, broken windows, or severe deterioration), It has been burned out, A number plate is missing.
If the vehicle or van meets one or more of the above criteria, please reply to Customer Services quoting your FixMyStreet reference number providing the relevant information example: Significantly damaged, unroadworthy, or number plate missing. This information is essential, as enforcement officers can only investigate reports in line with DEFRA abandoned vehicle guidance.
You can view the DEFRA guidance here: https://www.gov.uk/ guidance/ abandoned-vehicles-council-responsibilities
To Report an Untaxed / SORN Vehicle in good condition please report to DVLA https://www.gov.uk/ report-untaxed-vehicle
To report a vehicle without MOT or insurance call the police on 101 or report online: https://www.cambs.police.uk/ advice/ advice-and-information/ rs/ road-safety/ driving-offences/
If the vehicle is causing a parking problem or obstruction but not abandoned, please email parking.enforcement@peterborough.gov.uk.
