No Speed limit enforcement on Parkway Roadworks

Reported via desktop in the Road works category anonymously at 07:01, Wed 13 October 2021

Sent to Peterborough City Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 3059086.

I would like to register my concern at the temporary 40 mph speed limit on the Frank Perkins Parkway in Peterborough which has been in place now for many months since March 2021. This speed limit is apparently related to repairs to the central reservation barriers. As a regular commuter to Peterborough, it is apparent that little to no progress is being made with this roadworks. The 40 mph speed limit is not being enforced, has lost all credibility with the majority of drivers on the road and is being widely ignored. Trying to stick to the 40mph speed limit is challenging due to the aggressive and dangerous behaviour of other drivers when faced with a vehicle attempting to maintain 40 mph. This is an accident situation waiting to happen. The extended delay in completing these remedial works on a major road into Peterborough and the lack of, visible, traffic law enforcement reflects badly on the city.

  • Thank you for your enquiry regarding the temporary speed limit on the A1139. The speed limit is a legal requirement whilst the safety barrier along the central reservation is incomplete. Our contractor is only permitted to work during evening hours to avoid congestion at peak times, so unfortunately it may appear to be unnecessary during the day but it is a safety requirement until all of the work to safety barrier has been completed. We have ensured the legal order is in place and it is now the responsibility of the police to carry out enforcement.

We are aware that the speed limit is being ignored so we are exploring other methods to encourage drivers to obey the temporary speed limit. In the meantime, I will contact the police department again and will ask that they show presence and ensure enforcement action is taken whilst the temporary speed limit is in place.

I hope this provides sufficient clarification that this is a necessary requirement for public safety, please contact me should you wish to discuss further.
