Roots of 40ft tree causing damage to path and pote
Reported in the Tree is considered to be causing damage category anonymously at 21:30, Wed 27 May 2020
Sent to Peterborough City Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2131839.
Roots from a very large Sycamore tree which stands close to our back fence has, over a period of time, caused the paving slabs of our pathway to dislodge to the extent that they present a health and safety hazard and therefore the path cannot safely be used. During the 20yrs that we’ve owned the property, the tree has grown to an approximate height of 40ft and has now become a potential safety hazard to residents and neighbouring properties. If the tree were to be blown down in a storm it would certainly cause a great deal of damage to our property and that of our neighbours’ in 173, and there is no doubt whatsoever, if the tree should fall in the other direction it would crash into a dwelling more closely situated behind it. The occupant’s bedroom and living room would take the full force of the collision and any persons using the flat would be very likely to receive serious injuries or indeed be killed. The area surrounding it is also used extensively by residents’ car parking. From time to time, large vehicles including lorries accidentally reverse into the tree while attempting to turn round, as it is situated in a cul-de-sac. As well as the visual damage caused each time, these collisions must be undermining the strength of the root system on one side of it. Tree roots have invaded our garden to the extent that we have had to erect raised beds in many parts in order to grow plants. When we had the sewage and drainage system inspected a few years ago, it was reported that the Sycamore roots were growing very close to blocking the drain as the tree is only a few metres away. Please could you arrange for our access pathway on PCC land to be made safe and will you also take into account, the safety of all residents and property, in the immediate vicinity and remove the offending tree.
